The Fine Print

Individual work

• The teacher assigns the student one or more Fine Print cards.
• The student reads the scenario and invents 3–5 hidden conditions that make it less appealing.
• They present the full "offer" to the teacher and explain why someone might — or might not — accept it.
• The teacher can model a sample answer before the activity.

For example:
Getting paid to travel — "But you can only visit one country, you must post on social media every hour, and you can never stay longer than two days."

Encourage students to be creative with conditions and explain their reasoning.

Pair / Group work (including breakout rooms)

• The teacher gives one or more cards to each pair or group.
• One student reads the scenario and adds their Fine Print conditions out loud.
• Their partner decides — would they accept the offer or not? — and explains why.
• Then they swap roles with a new card.

Class sharing
Invite some students or groups to share their most creative conditions with the class.

The class can discuss:
• the most accepted offers
• the most creative Fine Print
• which conditions were dealbreakers for everyone
• which card was the hardest to say yes to

Focus on fluency, opinion language, conditionals, and confident speaking in English.

Extra ideas
• Students try to make their partner say no by adding worse and worse conditions.
• Students rank three cards from most to least appealing after the Fine Print.
• Students write their own Fine Print card for a classmate.
