One Question Only

Individual work

• The teacher assigns the student one or more cards.
• The student reads the card and imagines they can ask the person one question only.
• They think about what information is most important to learn and write a single question that would help them understand the person as much as possible.
• The teacher can model a sample answer before the activity.

For example: A potential flatmate — "What does a normal day at home look like for you?"

Pair / Group work (including breakout rooms)

• The teacher assigns one or more cards to each pair or group.
• Each student reads their card and shares their question.
• Their partner reacts and discusses:

• Why is that a good question?
• What information could it reveal?
• Would they ask the same question or a different one?

• Then they swap roles with a new card.

Class sharing

Invite some students or groups to share their most interesting questions with the class.

The students can discuss:

• which questions revealed the most information
• which questions were the most creative
• which situations were the most difficult
• whether different people chose similar or completely different questions for the same card
• what makes a really good question in real-life situations.
